With the end of their third season in the AFL Darling Downs league coming to an end shortly, Lockyer Valley would be happy with their development and growth in their short history so far.
Boasting 82 junior members (with a few more still to sign up) so far in season 2012, the Demons currently sit 5th if you ranked clubs by the number of junior members registered. In their inaugural year 2010, they signed 44 juniors up to the Demons. This means they have almost doubled in size within a three year period.
They currently have 33 boys and girls in their Under 8’s and 10’s, as the next generation Demons gear up for a big future.
“It is exciting times ahead and we are working very hard to entrench ourselves into the community” said Lockyer Valley President Tony Bowers.
“We are looking at a number of different locations around the Valley to base us (Demons) at, we are working with the council to make this happen in the very near future“, President Bowers said on been asked about the current clubs location at the Gatton Showgrounds.
AFLQDO Jeff Neumann spoke with some of the up and coming stars of the club about why they love playing for the Demons.
Under 10 Cody Middleton said, “I love sharing the footy and helping my team mates during games”.
Another Under 10 Trent Gilchrist loves playing footy for the Demons and is a very keen Collingwood supporter.
“I love playing for the Demons because of my team mates and I love running around, kicking, passing and kicking goals” Gilchrist said.
With some very tough times in the past in the Lockyer Valley, the Demons have endured difficult hurdles to overcome and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
“We have some very big plans for the future but first we want to have a ‘home of the Demons’ and base ourselves at our very own venue”, President Bowers explained
Lockyer Valley might not play in the any finals campaign in 2012 but winning isn’t their main focus when taking the field.
“Every-time you take the field you want to win but that isn’t our main focus, we want our young Demons to go out and enjoy the great game of Australian Rules Football,” explained Bowers on the clubs main focus.
“We wouldn’t mind winning a few more games though”, chuckled Demons President.
In the remaining games for the season Lockyer Valley play Toowoomba Tigers/East Stingers, Highfields Lions, Goondiwindi Hawks and Pittsworth Power.
Can the Demons break the magic 100 (junior registered members), only time will tell. If you have the chance, make sure you get down to a Lockyer Valley home game before the season ends and sample something from the Demons famous canteen.
