WA NORTH-WEST has validated its inclusion into the AFL's national under-16 titles after winning its division in its debut outing at the championships.
The predominantly Indigenous side completed a clean sweep in all three of its Division 3 games, the new division created to cater for new teams at the championships, which were held in Sydney.
Players from the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions represent the WA North-West side and its players were selected following a talent camp held in Broome in April.
The side, coached by WA great Phil Narkle, ended the championships on a high, crushing the Andrew McLeod-coached Flying Boomerangs, Xavier Clarke's World XVIII, and South Pacific.
Showing consistent form over the duration of the week-long championships, Zenneth Cox was named WA North-West's MVP, while John Mason was named the Boomerangs' best.
The Boomerangs, chosen from the KickStart under-15 championships in April, didn't register a win from their three games.
Narkle got his side warmed up with a massive win over South Pacific by 87 points.
Newman’s Tom Hughes, South Hedland’s Izzy Razali, Halls Creek pair Daniel Cox and Brandon Skeen were major contributors in the side’s first-up win.
Former St Kilda and Brisbane forward Xavier Clarke, coach of the World XVIII side, got his team off to a winning start with a 19-point win over AFL great, Andrew McLeod’s side, the Flying Bomerangs.
Clarke’s World team is made up of players from multicultural backgrounds who are living in Australia and nine overseas-based players with Sudan, the United States, Denmark, India, South Africa and Indonesia represented.
The Boomerangs, chosen from the national Indigenous KickStart championships, were in with a shot at three-quarter time, trailing the World side inside just three goals but their opponents kicked away in the last to record the win.
Victoria's Cory Glass, Djye Thorpe-Morgan and Koolyn Briggs, Queensland's Heath Molloy and NSW/ACT’s Ben Davis were among the Boomerangs' best players.
The inclusion of WA North-West and the Flying Boomerangs adds yet another pathway for Indigenous young men to be exposed to elite-level coaching, best practice preparation and quality football.
