SOUTH Toowoomba and the Toowoomba Tigers gave an insight into the closeness of this year's AFL Darling Downs competition after fighting out a 94-94 draw at Harristown Park on Saturday.
The premiership heavyweights left nothing in the tank, kicking 13.14 each as they tried to assert their dominance ahead of the finals.
After a tight opening term, the Tigers had the better of play for most of the contest, breaking away to a 21-point lead at halftime.
They kept their momentum going to lead by 19 at the final change before the Bombers mounted a comeback.
Souths kicked six goals to three, including one inside the final minute to salvage a hard-fought draw.
The result keeps the Bombers' 12-game unbeaten streak alive but coach Shaun Reardon admitted they were lucky to scrape home.
"It's fair to say we got out of jail a bit there. Tigers were probably the better side for most of the game," he said.
"I thought we showed a lot of heart in the last quarter. To hold on for the draw is a pretty good result."
While Souths may have been happy to split the points, Tigers coach Andrew Farr was less than impressed.
"To be four goals in front and watch that disappear is very frustrating," he said.
"We had twice the number of inside 50s as Souths. But their defence was very good and our forward line was ineffectual.
"We drop off in games because of our inability to put sides away on the scoreboard."
Farr predicted an "incredibly tough week" ahead at training for the two-time defending premiers.
"I spoke to the boys about discipline and we let ourselves down," he said.
"I'm reasonably happy with how things are going but just some stupidity cost us.
"There's not a lot between the two sides. Anyone who can say one team is premiership favourites - that's rubbish."
