The battle for fourth place on the AFL Darling Downs ladder remains wide open after University went down 14.11 (95) to 7.11 (53) against the Toowoomba Tigers on Saturday.
Uni showed plenty of fight in the opening term, kicking three goals to one to stun the defending premiers. But the Tigers' class shone through as they out-scored Uni in the next three quarters to claim an important victory. The Cougars are locked in a heated battle with Warwick for the last finals place and only retained fourth spot at the weekend with their superior percentage.
And the Redbacks showed they are still right in the hunt with a 24.16 (160) to 4.6 (30) victory over a gallant Lockyer Valley outfit.
The Demons opened the game with some clever midfield play to notch the first major before the Redbacks kicked into gear to record a comfortable win and keep the pressure on Uni.
In the weekend's other matches, Coolaroo made it nine straight wins with a 14.7 (91) to 8.5 (53) victory over Highfields. The Lions were also fighting to keep their finals hopes alive but couldn't contain the in-form Roos. And Dalby recorded it's fourth win of the season in a high-scoring clash with Goondiwindi.
Defence was almost non-existent as both teams focused on scoring points, the Swans winning the shootout 20.14 (134) to 17.8 (110).
Big news from the weekends fixtures
Universities flag aspirations took a massive blow when key player Heath Gniel sustained a serious arm injury during the Tigers clash. Reports have that Gniel broke his arm and is out for the season. Gniel plays a massive role for the Cougars and University will be looking for the next breed of stars to fill the void for this superstar veteran.
