BEN DREWE | THE CHRONICLE | 2 JULY 2012
SOUTH Toowoomba kept its undefeated status intact with a hard-fought 10-point win over defending premiers Toowoomba Tigers on Saturday in the highly-anticipated AFL Darling Downs clash at Gatton Showgrounds.
The deferred round seven match-up lived up to expectations as little separated both teams throughout the four quarters as Souths secured an 8.15 (63) to 7.11 (53) victory.
The final margin was as far clear as either team got during the game.
Tigers took an early lead in the first quarter before the Bombers pegged them back to lead by two points at the first change.
That lead was extended by just one point at the main break to see Souths hold a slender three-point advantage heading into the third term.
Tigers wrestled the lead off Souths in the third stanza, kicking 2.2 to an inaccurate seven behinds for Souths which saw Tigers hold a four-point lead heading into the final term.
A goal early in the fourth quarter gave Tigers a 10-point lead before Souths hit back with two goals of their own. The Bombers then kicked a late major to seal the win.
In-form Souths full-forward Dan McPhee kicked four goals for the Bombers while midfielder Jeff Neumann was impressive.
Josh Andrews kicked two majors for Tigers in a game where Nic Upton returned from Brisbane club Morningside.
Jarryd Atkinson and Michael Bailey were strong for Tigers. Souths have now won their opening 11 games of the season to sit on top of the ladder.
The result sees Tigers remain in third on the ladder.
Tigers will get the chance to atone for the loss in just two weeks when they travel to Harristown Park to take on Souths again.
