President's Update June 29th 2012

John Matthews

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of our Treasurer John Matthew’s mother this week.  The Executive on behalf of everyone in the EDJBA has sent flowers to John and his wife Barbara in this difficult time. We wish John and Barbara well as I am sure everyone in the EDJBA does too.

Special General Meeting

The notice and papers for the Special General Meeting to deliberate and vote on the draft constitution have been sent out to all clubs, life members and other eligible people.  Megan Rouse is to be complimented on and thanked for the work she did preparing the notice papers and making sense of my, at times, somewhat disorganised writing.

As mentioned before in previous updates this is the moment when the EDJBA has the opportunity to adopt a constitution that will truly give the clubs the control they sought when changing the committee at the last Annual General Meeting.  It has been a long process with many people giving of their time and knowledge freely.

The final step was taken last week when the association called on Michael Tsotsos, a lawyer who drafted the Hawthorn Basketball Association constitution, to check and advise on the wording of the draft preparatory to the motion to adopt the draft constitution being sent out with the notice calling for the convening of the SGM.

Michael advised us that his work on behalf of us is being done pro bono, a gesture we very much appreciate.  Our thanks have been expressed to him for this contribution.

He has also advised us that once the meeting is complete he will peruse the minutes in preparation for the adopted constitution being submitted to the Consumer Affairs Department for approval, a step we sincerely hope is successful.

Administration Dates

Jo Chu is undertaking a review with the assistance of Alison Romas and Sue Scott of the key dates in the association’s year with a view to providing clubs with a calendar that allows them to plan for registration days and other key club dates.

When the process is complete Jo will circulate these dates.  The association is slowly upgrading its processes and over a period of time the association should become a much more professional body.

Policies

The Executive has agreed to undertake a review of the many policies the association has in place or those identified that should be adopted.  These include but not only the Heat Policy and the Jewellery Policy.  A sub-committee comprising David Hickman, John Morkham, Bill Rewell , Megan Rouse, Alison Romas and Jo Chu will undertake this review and report back to the Executive in due course.

Grading Forum

Another reminder that the Grading Forum to be held on Monday 23rd July is fast approaching.  This forum is an open one in which any person who thinks they can make a contribution is welcome to attend.  Please contact your club for information.

School Holidays

Finally please have a safe and rewarding school holiday period.  If you are travelling by road drive carefully.  We trust that you will return well rested if you are lucky enough to get away.

Once again,

Happy Hoops

Ron Carlton

President
