Going into the round 12 clash, both sides along with Highfields sat tied on 20premiership points and with Highfields having the BYE, winning this game would go a long way to deciding who has finals action.
University claimed outright fourth position with a comfortable 14.14 (98) to 6.5 (41). Warwick were able to goal first through player-coach Jason Wright but three quick goals to Uni's Al Reilly, Jarryd McCarthy and Heath Gniel saw the Cougars take a slender but important 8 points lead into the first change.
Warwick's Nick Donges kept his side in the contest with two second quarter goals to take the lead for the first time but it was University's key man up forward Joel Yosh who kicked 3 majors and Skipper Al Reilly added another to his tally for the afternoon. Coach Bolton would of been happy with his sides (USQ) 20point lead at the long break but would of known the Redbacks would keep coming.
Most coaches would talk about the third quarter as the premiership quarter and if Saturday is anything to go by, then look out for University come finals. The Cougars piled on 5 unanswered goals in the third term as in form veteran Heath Gniel added two majors to his afternoon tally while McCarthy, Harley and Hopkins all added individual majors to stretch the Cougars lead to an unbeatable 52points at the final break.
It was a low intensity fourth quarter, as University had the game won and the Redbacks trying to ease the damage. Joel Yosh added another goal to take his tally to 4 majors for the afternoon, while young player Reynolds kicked his first for the day.
Randall and Heier were able to chip in for one goal each, to bring the margin back but the damage had been done as the Cougars ran out 14.14 (98) to 6.5 (41) victors on a crisp afternoon at Roddies Oval.
What the win means for University
University play all three teams above them in their run to finals, which will be good indicator to where University are come finals. USQ should have easy wins of Goondiwindi, Dalby and Lockyer Valley and they will need to win at least one of those top 3 games to make finals. The win over Warwick gives them a games break over Warwick and Highfields and boosts their percentage to 198%, well clear by more than 70% over both the 5th and 6th placed teams.
What the loss means for Warwick
This was a must win at home for Warwick, they have one of the easiest draws in the run to finals. They do have the reigning premiers in round 17 and the unpredictable Highfields in Round 15. If the 2012 Grand-Finalists want to take on another finals appearance this year, they CAN NOT drop a game from now on. McErvale back in is a major win, as the next generation of stars need to step up to help the ever consistent Iles.
All sides will have a break this weekend EXCEPT the clash between the Toowoomba Tigers and South Toowoomba Bombers. Both these sides will go head to head at Rockville Oval, this Saturday 30th June at 2:15pm. There will also be a Reserve Grade game at 12:30pm and a Under 14 game at 11:00am.
Why not come down and check out the only local footy on in the region, add to this the undefeated Under 18 Crows in action on Sunday against the Kenmore Bears from 2:30pm at Rockville Oval.
