Fledgling Club Kicks Off
Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Next year, a new footy club will be running on to the field in Melbourne's southeastern outskirts: the Rowville Rampagers Junior Girls Australian Football Club.
Rowville’s newest sporting club was formed to give girls within the local community the chance to play Australian football in a friendly environment which encourages girls to be themselves.
After the local dedicated girls competition failed to materialise, a bunch of parents with a can-do attitude decided to not sit around and whinge about no local competition and instead took action to promote girls football in a positive way in their community, and formed the fledgling club.
"As a parent group we understand the task ahead of us and we're very much aware the model may not succeed," says Club Administrator, Andrew Williams. "But rather than waiting for someone else to fix the problem, we prefer to try our best for our daughters."
The Rampagers is a club which will not only develop the participants' football skills but will take an active and leading role in developing junior girls’ football within the local and wider community.
The Rampagers will also compliment the existing Junior boys football clubs within the local community. Working collaboratively with other junior clubs will see junior girls’ football develop in the near future.
The Rampagers will commence competing in the 2013 season and aim to field at least one side in the Under 14s, Under 12s and Under 10s dedicated girls competition.
It is anticipated that the Rampagers will participate in the South Metro Junior Football League Girls Competition in 2013, and eventually participate and contribute to an Eastern Football League dedicated Girls Competition.
Look out for the club's formal launch in the near future.
