The carnival began with a hard fought win in trying conditions over the Northern Region on Monday and was backed up with another solid performance against Capricornia the following day. But it was a sterling effort on day 3 of the championships that sealed the win for the Downs as they fought back from an early deficit to beat traditional powerhouse Peninsula.
The win was made even sweeter with Darling Downs captain Tom Matthews (Dalby) being named player of the carnival and as a result earned a place in the Queensland squad. Tom was also named in the Country team (Division 2) along with team mates Eric Rattray (Stingers), Cambell Aston (Coolaroo) and Roly Brosnan and Angus Jakins who are Rookie Search players from Toowoomba Prep.
Coach Andrew Wickes was extremely proud of the way his players performed over the 5 days with Wickes also gaining selection as the coach of the Country team.
Well done to all involved.
