The Werribee Tigers face West Perth this weekend in their Quarter Final contest for the FOXTEL Cup competition.
The Werribee Tigers made light work of their first match against Burnie at Etihad Stadium in April. The Tigers ran away with a 133 point win over the Tasmanian side, which was initiated by a seven goals to nil scoring onslaught in the first quarter to open up a mammoth 57-point lead at quarter-time.
Coach, Scott West took quite a bit from the Tigers first match in regards to how the team should approach this unique competition.
“The thing that I learnt from our last FOXTEL game was that it’s very hard to get a real understanding of the opposition that you are coming up against so it’s really important to be strong on how you want to play and be discipline on how you want to set up. It is one of those ones where you need to take care of what you can control.”
West took confidence from the significant result they were able to achieve on the day.
“Our last FOXTEL game was really pleasing. We were able to get off to a good start, not only on the score board but in the way we wanted to play.”
West Perth currently sit 5th on the WAFL ladder after four wins, five losses and a draw last weekend. The side appears to be a far cry from their successful form last year when they were placed 2nd at this stage of the season with nine wins and one loss.
Werribee will be in good hands with West this weekend as he possesses a different insight into their opposition.
“I know a little about West Perth, not that this will be a factor in the game on the weekend but my older brother is a premiership player with the club and a good mate of mine Todd Curley played and coached there so I’ve always cast a keen eye on the club.
“In regards to the way they play today and there team, we have a little bit of information but again not as much as we would in our regular VFL season. Looking through their team we know it’s going to be hard game and we will have to be at our best to win.”
The Tigers have been blessed with the opportunity to strut their stuff on the most renowned ground in the country.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for our group to play at the MCG, it’s no doubt the most amazing place to play and hopefully for those in our team who are not on an AFL list it might inspire them to work harder so as they can get a crack at AFL footy and play there more often.”
When asked of any tactics to ensure players did not become overwhelmed by the occasion, West responded with an inspiring message.
“The only advice I will give our guys is to go out and enjoy it, take in the surroundings and atmosphere and play the game of your life,” West said.
One player who is no stranger to the MCG, having won an AFL premiership on the ground, is Werribee recruit Nathan Ablett. Ablett will make his senior debut for the senior when he takes to the field for the Tigers on Saturday.
The match will take place 10:30am on Saturday 9th June at the MCG before Richmond take on Fremantle in the AFL.
