Callais Chicken (Warwick), Sam Copland (Coolaroo) and Riley Easton (Dalby) have been named in the final U14 Western Taipans squad to contest the U14 State Championships from 25-29th June at Fishermans Road Complex, Maroochydore.
This comes on the back of an intensive training program with the Taipans and selection from U14 Crows games played earlier in the season as well as the recently held U14 South Country Championships. "All 3 players have worked extremely hard this season and are starting to see the benefits of their hard work" said Development manager Keith Webb.
Webb also highlighted the ability of players to be more comfortable playing at this level due to the regular exposure of higher intensity games that Darling Downs players are experiencing through the U14 Crows program. All 3 players are part of the U14 Crows program at present. "It's no coincidence that we are getting more players through to Taipans level this year. The Crows program as well as the introduction of the localised Lions Academy in 2011 is giving our players a great opportunity to fast track their game to the next level" Webb said.
Callais Chicken is a great example of hard work paying off. Calais is the only player to make the Taipans squad that is not part of the current Darling Downs Lions Academy. A great achievement especially given that his travel commitments could be an issue with the Chicken family being based in Warwick. To Callais' credit and his extremely supportive family, Callais has not missed a Crows or Taipans training session this year.
Brendan Shelton was the unfortunate player not to make the final selection for this year’s Taipans squad but has impressed all coaches with his skill level and will be a very strong candidate for next year’s team as he is a bottom age player.
The 3 players chosen brings a total of 8 players selected in this year’s Taipans U14 and U16 final squads a great indication that the pathway is working well.
Best of luck goes out to the young men for their upcoming State Championships
