THE under-14 Darling Downs Crows may only be in their first season but Will Grundon reckons the experience has already helped him improve leaps and bounds.
The team was established this season to provide young players with an extra stepping stone into senior football. And 14-year-old Will is one of the Crows' early success stories. Will first kicked a Sherrin when he was six years old for the now-defunct Kingaroy club.
He is a jack of all trades on the field, moving around between the halfback line, ruck-rover and midfield positions. And Will said he'd seen a lot of improvement in every facet of his game since joining the Crows.
"It's a lot tougher but it's definitely helped me get better," he said.
"I reckon I've been doing pretty good. It keeps you interested in the sport."
Things haven't been easy for the Crows in their maiden season but they've been far from the competition whipping boys. Darling Downs has held its own against the top Brisbane sides and can already boast the scalp of the previously unbeaten Sherwood Magpies.
"It's a bit harder but you've got to step up to the challenge," Will said
"We're doing pretty good but there's still room for improvement. I at least hoped to get into the top eight, that would be pretty good achievement for us in our first year."
Will said the experience of playing the Crows had also helped lift his form with club side Highfields. The Lions secured a memorable victory over Dalby last weekend in which only one kick missed the mark for a behind. Will believed that the skills they had developed in the Darling Downs teams had played a big part in the success.
"I've got about seven Highfields team mates playing in the Crows, " Will said. "We're sitting in third at the moment, hopefully we're going to make it to the grand final this year."
