Wedderburn’s Donaldson Park was the venue for the Redbacks and Magpies contest. Wedderburn lead at every change but were certainly pressured by the Boort Magpies for all four quarters.
In a very keen and physical encounter, the Redbacks and Magpies turned it on for the very large crowd at Donaldson Park.
Right from the first bounce’ Boort gave a strong signal to the reigning premiers that their win prior to Inter – League was not going to be a one-off win. With all players committed from both sides the early part of the first quarter was very scrappy with no side able to gain any advantage until Barnes broke the shackles to register the home side’s first goal. Jarrod Fitzpatrick responded for Boort after some good play from their midfield. Wedderburn reacted from the overall pressure being applied from Boort when Barnes and Herdman were able to give the home side to lead by 14-points at the first break in play.
Wedderburn copped a bit of a spray at the quarter time huddle and this appeared to hit home, as they swung into gear with Barnes and Herdman combining for the first of the Redbacks four goals for the quarter. Easton put Boort back in the game only to fire up Barnes, Benaim and Strange who all kicked important goals, nearing the time-on period Sipthorpe goaled for the visitors to reduce the half time lead of the Redbacks to 28-points.
In the third term neither side was able to gain any advantage as the struggle for supremacy continued, the home side was able to advance the half time lead by five points to 39 by the last change. Herdman, Rose and Weston were the Redbacks goal scorers, with Stewart bringing up Boort’s only goal.
Boort were a different team in the final term and they made many forward moves, which had the Redbacks a bit stunned as the Magpies slammed on goals from Easton, Rice and Garvy-Hawke, before Rice added two more goals and the margin was back to 10-points. Herdman steadied for the Redbacks with McKay and Terhell again putting the win out of the Magpies reach. Rice kicked number four for the quarter before Rose responded for the Redbacks and as we went into overtime Rice brought up his fifth for the quarter but the reigning premiers had done sufficient to gain the four points and run out winners by 20 points.

Donald v St Arnaud
St Arnaud made the trip to Donald looking to get back on the winning list, this they were able to achieve by 65-points after a strong push from the home side until half time.
The saints were first on the board kicking the first two goals before Burke kicked Donald’s only goal for the quarter. James registered another goal for the Saints just prior to the first break, with St Arnaud leading by two goals.
Donald was out to rectify their failure to convert up forward and attacked early with Dunstan and Jennings kicking majors for the home side. St Arnaud looked to be a little stunned by the change of attitude from the Royals and could not match their style of play in the second term where the home side took a small advantage closing in on half time. St Arnaud finally got things together and with late goals was again in from at the main change, leading by 11-points.
In a fairly even third quarter both sides were under pressure in the back half with Donald’s backline being led by Funcke and Petrie was his equal at the other end for the Saints. St Arnaud missed some easy shots at goal which would have given them a good lead had they been able convert, but it wasn’t to be as the home side stuck to their task and were only 10 points in arrears at the last break.
The final term was all St Arnaud’s as they piled on 10-goals to the Royals 1, and shoot out to a 65 point lead at the final bell. Saints had many good contributors in this last quarter and deserved their win, which signals that they look to be on the right track and a top four spot on the North Central Ladder being their reward.

The demons set the pace early in the first quarter when they raced out to an 18 point lead and looked too quick for the Bulls. Jones was in good form for the home side and Lachy Foott was matching motors with the demons best in the first term. At the end of the first quarters play the Demons had extended their lead out to twenty seven points.
The second term saw the home side again in control of the game, until Jones was sent off for 15 minutes. This the Bulls took full advantage of and quickly wiped out the Demons lead and after trailing for most of the first half found themselves with a 1-point lead at half time.
Birchip-Watchem continued their good form after the main break and was controlling the game with Foott leading way with Garland and Postlewaite giving great support. For the Demons Josh White was a standout and was being well supported by Joel Turner. At the three quarter time break the visitors was holding onto a seven point lead and the game was set for a big last term.
Wyche-Narraport reduced that margin back to one point within a minute of the start of play. The Bulls through Foott answered and the game was on. Both sides made many forward moves with the Demons letting their chances slip with some easy chances going to either side of the big sticks and would turn out to be costly at the end of play which seen the home side six points in arrears at the final siren.
