At the half way mark of the season the top three teams have drawn away from the rest of the pack with Souths and the Tigers sitting undefeated at the top of the table and Coolaroo only 1 game behind on 24 points. Things really start to get interesting with positions 4-6 currently occupied by University, Warwick and Highfields respectively.
All three teams sit on 16 points but its Warwick who has been dealt a double blow as their round 4 encounter with Lockyer was called a forfeit as the Demons did not have enough players to take the field after half time. While the Redbacks still picked up the 4 points they did not receive any percentage for this game which means they still lag 40 percentage points behind University and with Heath Gniel and Joel Yosh booting 17 goals between them in their corresponding game against Lockyer, in a game they were initially not supposed to play in, you may argue that the Redbacks have been dealt a dud hand.
What does this mean for the Redbacks? It’s simple; they have to beat teams above them on the ladder if they want to play finals this year and what better way to do that than to knock off the currently undefeated dual reigning premiers in the Toowoomba Tigers this weekend.
We all know that Brendan Iles is like a mixture of pure sodium and water, the result is an explosion of pure talent on the football field. What the Redbacks need is their second tier of talent to stand up and become leaders on the football field just like Steele Sidebottom and Dane Beams have done for the magpies in the absence of Luke Ball this season.
Just like monogamy for Shane Warne this task won’t be easy for the Redbacks but the reward will be just as sweet as waking up next to Liz Hurley every morning.
In other games the South Toowoomba Bombers will face a Lockyer Demons outfit brimming with confidence after their first regular season win last week. The Highfields Lions host the Dalby Swans and Coolaroo hit the road to face off against Goondiwindi at Riddles oval.
