Round 9 sees the conclusion of the first round of matches and will give each team a true representation of where they are in the 2012 competition.
The Warwick Redbacks have made their way back into the top 4 with 2 consecutive wins and are once again starting to look like the team which made the big day last year. Brendan Iles has once again hit top form after being named in the QLD Stockmen’s team after his representative team performance. Last weekend he emulated Jack Black in Anchorman taking punts from all angles, although thankfully it wasn’t Ron’s dog Baxter taking the battering, it was the scoreboard as he slammed on 11. The ex-University player Thye Clarkson has also provided a welcome introduction into the midfield and when combined with Matthew Sinkins, the forward line will be sure to get plenty of supply.
The South Toowoomba Bombers continued on their winning ways last week, notching up victory number 6 over Highfields. Daniel McPhee was once again strong up forward for the Bombers kicking 7 goals to take the lead in the Souths goalkicking table with 22. The Bombers have been very slow starters in the past couple of weeks but have blown the opposition away in the second quarter. They will either need to look at their pre-game routine or look to get sponsorship from Ice Break (Real Coffee Ice Cold) to ensure they start the game a bit more switched on this week.
Both teams play hard contested footy with a focus on spreading from the contest and running in waves. The forwards at each end are used to quick supply so it will come down to the defence of each team to decide the contest. If you’re looking for a game to watch this week head on down to Roddies Oval to catch a fantastic game of footy.
Other matchups see the also undefeated Tigers head up to Highfields in a match Highfields will be keen to win to push into the top 4. University host Dalby in a danger game for the Cougars as Dalby are set to recall a number of Crows players for the match. Lockyer Valley host Goondiwindi in a clash both teams will have been looking forward to all season. Lockyer are yet to record a win since their entrance into the competition in 2010 and will desperately want to change that this week. Goondiwindi have struggled this year with low player numbers at away games and could field an under strength side in their away clash.
The round promises some exciting matchups with important games for all clubs. University also host Coolaroo in their second Reserves matchup in 2 weeks. The Roos will no doubt drop a couple of A Grade players back to the second division which will create a far closer contest than the 15 goal loss last week.
