Box Hill coach Damian Carroll has identified ball movement as the key area for improvement if the Hawks want to beat North Ballarat on Saturday, as Adem Saricaoglu reports.
The Roosters will go into the game with better form after outscoring Coburg in a shootout at Eureka Stadium last week, while the Hawks were disappointing in a 52-point loss to Casey.
Carroll said the review of the Casey game was “pretty honest”.
“We definitely weren’t good enough to play a brand of footy we wanted to on the day, so that was disappointing but we certainly have to focus on this week now and get ourselves up for North Ballarat,” Carroll said.
“We tried to obviously look at ourselves first and see where we can improve in terms of our ability to move the footy and get the ball and obviously play in our half, which we struggled to do.
“We were disappointing in some of those areas last week so we need to ensure that we’re back competing well and moving the ball the way we want to and certainly try to play the game on our terms.”
Despite the ladder having Box Hill four spots above North Ballarat, Carroll is wary of what the Roosters can produce.
“They’re really quick with their ball movement and they’re a side that have a lot of dangerous goal-kickers, so we obviously need to keep the footy out of their hands,” he said.
“They run hard and they run both ways so it will be a massive challenge for us, but we’ve played some good footy at times this year so let’s hope we can bring that game into Saturday.”
North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald said his side will hopefully take a lot of confidence out of last week’s win and bring it to Box Hill City Oval this Saturday.
“Obviously (we take) confidence from winning a game we needed to win,” FitzGerald said.
“In a very, very even season any win is extremely valuable, but we’ve got to follow up now.”
FitzGerald said Box Hill’s preseason recruiting and alignment with Hawthorn will mean it will be tough to be beat such a strong team on their home turf.
“I think they’re a good all-round side, we know them well,” FitzGerald said.
“I have a very high regard for their coach, he’s a terrific young coach, and we expect them to be a very, very good opposition so we’ll need to play really well.”
The game starts at 2pm at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
