A trip to the Pensinula is usually associated with a holiday, but it was another day at the office for the Werribee Tigers as Ben Carbonaro reports.
Factor in club captain Robbie Castello breaking Werribee’s games record and one couldn’t think of any other greater motivation.
The positives outweighed the negatives in a consistent four quarter performance as Werribee’s recorded a 33-point win over Frankston at Frankston Oval last Sunday.
Both teams started slowly, with neither scoring until the 10 minute mark when power forward Ben McKinley broke the deadlock. The Dolphins quickly gained the momentum as they kicked the next three goals and led by 11 points at quarter time.
The Tigers kicked three goals to Frankston’s one in the second quarter but it wasn’t a reflection of the closely contested football played by both teams. Werribee led by just four points at half-time.
Werribee controlled the game after half time, setting up their impressive away win with four third quarter goals. Travis Tuck, Malcolm Lynch, Robbie Tarrant and Ben Warren all got their names on the goal kickers list before Frankston came back with two. A late Ben McKinley goal, courtesy of a free kick, gave the Tigers a 24-point lead at the final change.
Despite a fighting effort from the home side, Werribee got over the line thanks to superior ball handling and pinpoint passing. The Tigers kicked four goals to three in a strong final quarter performance to seal victory, they now occupy fourth on the ladder with four wins from seven games.
Werribee coach Scott West was pleased to make it back to back wins after an inconsistent start to this season.
“Very happy, a win’s a win and (I’m) always happy winning,” he said.
“They (Frankston) started really well and competed, we know that was going to happen (on a) terrific deck. It’s a credit that we are able to get some momentum in the second half and get on with the game.”
Having a good spread of goal kickers was another positive that pleased West.
“That’s what we’re looking for, it we can get multiple goal kickers or goal kickers around the ground it obviously helps. In difficult situations, we can know we can play some good footy and it’s not easy to win away from home.”
Lachlan Hansen and Cameron Pedersen shared the goal kicking honours, both kicking two goals each.
Kangaroo Cameron Pedersen was named best on ground. He was Werribee’s Mr Fix It, playing down back, kicking two goals and providing ruck relief. Levi Greenwood (29 disposals), Sam Gibson and emerging defender Ayden Kennedy were also among the better players for Werribee. Midfield Ben Ross was also super consistent through the midfield with his run and carry.
The ABC TV cameras head to Avalon Airport Oval for the first time this season when Werribee face Northern Blues from 1:10pm on Saturday.
