TRENT SLATTER | THE CHRONICLE | 15 MAY 2012
DARLING Downs finally broke an away team hoodoo with a 64-point victory over Northern Rivers in Saturday's one-off representative match at Ballina.
Miels Grice booted eight majors as the Demons dominated up front to prevail 19.7 (121) to 8.2 (50).
"They were a pleasure to coach. Everyone stuck to the plans and listened," Darling Downs coach Chris Skehan said.
"It seemed a lot closer than the scoreline. We just converted better and had a lot more options up front."
Midfielder Brendan Iles was awarded the Dick Zahendra Medal for best-on-ground while Nick Jones received the Bill Shaw Medal as Darling Downs' best.
The game was played in greasy conditions with a twilight start but Iles said the team handled it well.
"You have to adjust as the ball's getting more slippery as the night goes on and you have to adjust from daylight to field lighting," he said.
"The whole team adapted well to the higher intensity of the game."
A Queensland Stockmen's team will be selected based on performances in the representative game.
