Seniors – University Vs Warwick But this predicament does not have the 3 time Holman Medallist and star on baller Brendan Iles worried. In a previous interview conducted with the Post Game Post Iles stated “we were in a very similar position last year but managed to finish the season very well so as a club we are not too concerned”.
You would have to go back several years to find the Cougars and Redbacks placed so far down the ladder after 5 rounds of games played which is credit to relatively new teams in Highfields and Dalby and further evidence of the expansion of the senior competition on the Downs. University bounced back to form last week with a hard fought win over Highfields while the Redbacks were on the other side of the ledger against Coolaroo as they were run over late in the game to go down by 19 points.
This leaves last year’s Grand Finalists with 2 wins and 3 loses from their opening 5 games and another loss today would leave the Redbacks labouring a long way behind the competition leaders. Iles and Wright bounced back to form last week with solid games but Warwick’s problem this season has been their inability to post large totals. They will need to reverse this trend today if they are going to get the 4 points.
The Cougars silenced a few critics in a must win game last week against the Lions and in doing so played a couple of their dangerous small forwards back into form in Heath Gniel and Jarryd McCarthy. Add to that the consistent form of rebounding defender Josh Timmer and the contested marking ability of veteran forward Al Reilly and you have a side whose structure looks solid. The Cougars will be very keen to beat another team vying for a finals position today especially with the not too distant return of hard running midfielders in Chris Davis and Luke Brumley.
In other games the currently undefeated South Toowoomba and Toowoomba Tigers are both on the road this week with the Bombers heading to Dalby to take on the much improved Swans while the Tigers head to Riddles Oval to take on the Goondiwindi Hawks. Rounding out this week’s games the Roos are at home against the Lockyer Valley Demons while the Highfields Lions have the bye
