Wycheproof-Narraport v Wedderburn
In perfect conditions for football last year’s grand finalists Wycheproof-Narraport and Wedderburn took to the stage in a replay of the 2011 premiership contest. Early in the game it looked like we were in for another great game between these two great sides, but Wedderburn with Rose and Barnes firing up forward put the visitors in a strong position by quarter time, with a 17-point lead.
In the second term, the Demons forward moves were quickly turned back by the strong Redbacks, backline, who were not letting any scoring attempts happen. Rose was dominating from his wing and was running his opponent a merry dance, and when he scored his third goal for the half the Demons felt it was time for a change, but the same result happened and they could not stop the classy winger. Strange was giving the visitors first use of the ball in the ruck and he was well supported by Tonkin who was gaining plenty of the Sherrin. The Demons were held to 1-goal for the term and at the half time break the Redbacks had extended their lead out to 32-points.
Wyche-Narraport was leaving the bulk of the work to too few and only for Jones and James Coatsworth the half time result could have been worse.
After the long break things would not improve for the Demons, with the Redbacks continuing their form of the first half and adding another five goals, while restricting the Demons to just the one goal. With the scoreboard not looking too good for the home side, thing didn’t get better when classy rover Joey Coatsworth went down with what looked to be a serious knee injury. Wedderburn were well in control of the game and had winners on every line, whatever the Demons tried didn’t come off and with the Redbacks having many goal kickers their task was not getting any better. At the last change it was the visitors holding a comfortable lead of 53-points when the siren sounded to end play for the quarter.
Wycheproof-Narraport made a minor come back but it was short lived as the Redbacks went about building to their already impressive score. Barnes kicked three goals for the term to give him, five for the day. With seven goals to three in the last quarter, the Redbacks, who had given a fine display over four quarter’s signalled that they will be the side to beat come September, while in the Demons camp, they have some players to return, which will help them greatly, as they set their sights resurrecting their goal for 2012, a place in the top four.

St Arnaud v Boort
St Arnaud recorded their second win in as many weeks when they come from behind to record a 35-point win.
The first quarter was very competitive for both sides with the home side drawing first blood with a goal to Motlop, Boort responded with two quick goals from Lanyon and Hodoras, but the Saints were able to match Boort and finished the term with two goals to give them a 9-point lead at quarter time.
In the second quarter Boort kicked with the aid of a slight breeze were getting plenty of drive from Lanyon who was gaining plenty of possessions. Stewart was also doing his share of the work from his pivot position but the Saints could not capitalise on his good work. Boort’s focal point was Easton and he was presenting on many occasions and teamed well with Baker late in the quarter to bring up both flags and extend their lead at the main break out to 7-points.
After the break both sides were unable to make any form of a break on their opposition, with both back lines defending strongly. This quarter didn’t see much work for the goal umpires with only two goals being kicked for the quarter, both to the Saints who had the use of the wind but failed to take advantage of it and at the last break the Saints had gained the lead by slender 2-points.
With nothing separating the sides the last quarter sounded to start proceeding and it was the Saints who scored the first of their eight goals for the quarter, Boort we quick to reply on a couple of occasions and the game was back in the balance. The home side attacked again and again with positive results and before the visitors new it the game was getting beyond their reach. Needs and Motlop stepped up for the Saints and topped off the good work of McNamee who was having another good day at the office. When the siren sounded to end the day’s play it was the home side who would grab the four points with a 35-point win.
Best for the Saints, McNamee, Smith, Stewart, Motlop, Dyke and Torney.
Goals, Needs 4, Motlop 3, Torney, Priest 2, Goglan and James 1 each.
Best for Boort, Lanyon, Baker, Wilson, Hodoras, Johnston, Jackson.
Goals, Easton 3, Stewart, Rhook, Johnston, Massina and Rice 1 Each.
Birchip-Watchem v Charlton
Charlton travelled to Birchip, looking to turn around their form of the previous week when they went down to St Arnaud. The Navy Blues were into attack early, with Mulquiny locking in the first major for the visitors. Birchip-Watchem was quick to reply and they repeated the dose immediately and by the end of the first quarter they would still be 5-points adrift of the Navy Blues.
In the second term it was the Bulls who stepped up the pace and continue their good form from the previous week. With goals coming freely the home side started to extend their lead over the visitors and by the time the quarter ended they held a 13-point lead a turnaround from their previous quarter of three goals.
Charlton kicked back strongly in the third quarter when the added five goals and restricted the home side to just the one goal, Roberts and Finlay were the prime movers for the Navy Blues and the Bulls couldn’t shut their run down. The McGraths got into the action both kicking much needed goals in this quarter and at the last change held a two goal lead.
In the last quarter both side’s were confident of a win and with very little scoring opportunities being offered there was not going to be much in it at the finish. Both sides were able to add a couple of goals but the Bulls wasted chances in attack with minor scores dominating the results. Charlton hung on to win by 8-points and they would be happy to get the points as the form line of the Bulls from the previous week would have had most good judges tipping the home side.
The Bulls are yet to lock in a win but their chance comes next week when they take on Boort who are also yet to register a win.
Best for Charlton, Roberts, Finlay, Wellington, McCormick, Sait and Daniel Thiesz.
Goals, Mulquiny, Joe McGrath 3, James McGrath 2, Wellington, Finlay and Kyrikides 1 each
Best for the Bulls, J. Noonan, J. Hogan, C. Hall, L. Foott, C. Postlewaite, Garland.
Goals, J. Hogan 4, L. Foott 3, J Tyler, C. Hall, C. Postlewaite 1 each.
Next Week, Wedderburn v Donald, Boort v Birchip-Watchem and Charlton v Wycheproof-Narraport.
