Despite only having opposition for 3 teams on the weekend, the The USQ Cougars have hit the magical ton with 14 new junior registrations in Round 4. Rises were recorded in all age groups for the second consecutive week and aren't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon.
University dropped out of the Under 16 competition back in 2008 due to insufficient player numbers, only to reinstate the team last season, narrowly falling short of the ultimate goal. In the past few years however the club has seen consistent growth, the result of plenty of hard work by all involved. Ross Savill, the QLD Auskick Coordinator of the Year in 2010 has brought many kids into the club with the assistance of his many training and match-day helpers. As the kids have grown, Rod Brown & Shane Melrose have also managed to ensure the kids enjoy the footy and return the following season. The club now has 28 registered Under 12s & 25 registered Under 16s which looks good for some 22-a-side games in the near future.
Around the league, Round 4 was a big one for all involved with 41 newly registered kids pulling on the boots. This brings the yearly total to 635, just 9 short of 2011's final tally. Coolaroo has moved into second position with 87 registrations, just ahead of Highfields with 86. Highfields have seen a 39% increase on 2011 to date, underpinned by 24 Under 8s!
The Come n Try inititave, which allows all children to play up to 3 games for free has certainly helped player numbers and clubs are encouraged to continue to promote this to friends and family. Likewise, the Auskick discount has seen some fantastic transition numbers.
