Werribee Tigers will kick off their Foxtel Cup campaign this Saturday at Etihad Stadium against Tasmanian SL side Burnie. In what will be the third game of the 2012 Foxtel Cup, the Tigers will be looking to get back on the winning list after defeats in round two and three of the Peter Jackson VFL season.
New Werribee Tigers coach Scott West hopes this Saturday’s game is an opportunity for his club to get back on track, and start to work on a few areas his side has been deficient in over the last fortnight.
“The season so far has been a little frustrating. As a team we just haven't been able to put consistent quarters together which has really affected our results. When you play quality teams you can’t afford to be off for even a minute, or you’ll get the results we have got,” West said.
“The consistency part of our game is something we need to address. Part of the inconsistency is the fact a fair few of guys haven’t played a lot of footy together so the more games we play hopefully will mean we start to understand how each other play better.”
The unique nature of the Foxtel Cup has the best State League teams from around Australia competing in a knockout round robin competition, but West has treated the game like another home and away contest.
“We have really tried to prepare for this game as we would for any home and away game, so we have people researching their team and game style.
“As for the game, it will be a very competitive, having never played them it’s hard to know how we will match up but we do know they have very good players we will need to watch.”
Werribee Tigers General Manager Mark Penaluna said his club is excited to be part of the Foxtel Cup for the first time.
“Everybody associated within the Werribee FC is delighted and excited to be participating within the Foxtel Cup.
“It offers our players the opportunity to compete against the best State based clubs, whilst giving our staff the opportunity to exercise their talents on a National stage,” Penaluna said.
“From an overall club perspective, we are genuinely embracing all facets of the Foxtel Cup, whether it be from a competitive nature, marketing, media accessibility and much more.
Do you think it will provide your players with a different kind of football experience?
”There is little doubt that our players are looking forward to the Foxtel Cup and in particular playing against the Burnie Dockers.”
The game kicks off at 11:05am Saturday at Etihad Stadium. Admission for the match will be free, with spectators able to enter through Gate 2 which will be open from 10.30am. Seating is on Level 1, aisles 1-25.
