BASKETBALL GRADE GRAND FINALS

The minor grades of the Basketball Mount Gambier Senior Summer competitions were played last week.  Highlight of the title games were the close contests and small margins in the final results.

Grand Final week opened with the A Reserve grades on Monday night. Favourite Cougars Women faced a tough contest against Rooettes in the first three quarters. Ebony Cunningham and Georgia Green helped keep Cougars in front by a narrow margin and then open up a match winning lead late in the game. Tracey Ferguson led the scoring for Rooettes. Final Scores were 29-22.

Ebony Cunningham won the District Council of Grant MVP in the Grand Final.

Bullets, led by Josh Nobes, defeated West in a high standard and skilful A Reserve Men’s Grand Final. Final scores were 33-28. Steve Wenman, Joe Ferguson-Lane and Rowan Fox shared the scoring for West.

The Women’s Social title was won by Bay Waves, 42 over Violet Vixens on 28.Mel Neave and Brooke Williams finished off consistently for the Waves while season MVP Dana Hirst was top scorer for Violet Vixens. Most Valuable player in the Grand Final was Brooke Williams.

The Wreckett Wreckers managed to hang on in the closing minutes to win the Men’s B Grade Gold Division premiership. Pines led narrowly in the last quarter but a timely three pointer from Rohan Harrap set up the win for the Wreckers. Top scorers in the game were Harrap and season MVP Tyson Ploenges for Pines. Harrap capped off a big night by winning the Grand Final MVP.

Beagle Boys Red defeated a gallant Hawks, 40-38 in the Blue Division of Men’s B Grade. Red appeared in control midway through the last quarter but the Hawks, renowned for their “never beaten” approach, came home strongly and had many opportunities to grab the lead. Red steadied through former Pioneer Jimmy Fleming and claimed the title. Fleming was named MVP for the final.
