Round 1 - Local Derby
Coburg Tigers will start the 2012 Peter Jackson VFL Season with a big game against local rivals, the Northern Blues. Coburg will be hosting the new look Blues at Mantello Holden Oval on Saturday 24th March.
This local derby has seen many tight games with the two Clubs playing off 145 times - Coburg winning 72, Northern Blues 70 and 3 games drawn.
2011 fixtured the teams to play twice, the Northern Blues winning in Round 3 by 7 points and Coburg victors in Round 18 by 6 points.
It is no wonder the ABC has selected this match as the first game to kick of their televised coverage of the 2012 Peter Jackson VFL.
Tigers trip to the Countryside
Coburg Tigers will be promoting the Peter Jackson VFL far and wide this season, by taking VFL Football out to Victoria’s rural areas.
Coburg will be playing two games in country Victoria during the 2012 Home & Away Season.
Round 11 will see the Tigers take on Bendigo on Saturday 10th June at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.
Three weeks later, Coburg will be travelling along the coast to Warrnambool where they will play against Geelong on Sunday 1st July at Reid Oval.
Coburg and Richmond alike, will be helping take the game to the people should develop a stronger supporter base for the Club’s out in these regional areas.
On the field, back to back best and fairest winner at the club Sam Power will be a big loss, but the club has again looked to the TAC Cup to inject young players into their lineup, similar to what they were able to do with the likes of Willie Wheeler and Glen Grgic last season. The Tigers were able to mix it with the top 8 sides last year, claiming the scalps of finalists Casey Scorpions (twice), Northern Blues and Bendigo (twice), but they were unable to record a win against bottom side Frankston in both their 2011 encounters. Finding a key target in the forward line will be the key for Coburg this season, with majority of their goals having come from the midfield in recent years.
Coach’s Comment:
Coburg’s Pre Season has been very productive thus far. This is my second year as Coach and we have been able to develop some stability within our coaching group by retaining our Assistant and Development Coaches. This has enabled us to develop our game plan earlier and put a larger emphasis on it.
We have recruited a new Strength and Conditioning Coach, Rob Innes. Rob has put a lot of hard work into the boys and as a result, our fitness standards are very high which should benefit us going into the Season.
We have some younger players that are starting to reach 20, 30, 40 games and we hope they will take the next step as individuals this Season
