Schools from across the Darling Downs converged in Toowoomba for the annual Youth Girls Cup in beautiful conditions at Middle Ridge Park.
Crow's Nest State School got their 2012 campaign off to a blistering start with a big win over their seconds, while St Saviours and Concordia battled it out, in a cross town derby. St Saviours continued their good round 1 form, with a hard fought 4 point win over Crow's Nest (1), while Our Lady of the Southern Cross College flexed their muscles against a much younger opponent in Concordia.
In round 3, St Saviours continued their undefeated streak for the day, with a narrow 2 point victory over Our Lady of the Southern Cross College. While Concordia College recorded their first win of the day, with a 11goal win over Crow’s Nest (2).
The OLOSCC and Crow's Nest (2) game was one sided, as Our Lady cemented 2nd on the ladder with a big win. Concordia slid into third position as they knocked off their fancier opponent in Crow's Nest (1). With St Saviours securing 1st spot after the round robin games, they went straight into the Grand-Final while the remaining teams battled it out for a spot in the big game.
FINAL LADDER - Round Robin Games
1st St Saviours College - 4wins
2nd OLOSCC - 3wins
3rd Concordia - 2wins
4th Crow’s Nest (1) - 1win
5th Crow’s Nest (2) - 0wins
Crow's Nest (1) over powered their second side to take out the 4th place play off, while Our Lady of the Southern Cross College and Concordia went head to head for a spot in the Grand-Final against the undefeated St Saviours side. Our Lady of the Southern Cross College proved too strong for Concordia, with an impressive 5goal victory in the Minor Final.
In what turned out to be an epic final, St Saviours College led the way in the low scoring Grand-Final, right up until the last 30seconds. Emulating "Daniel Chicks, smother, pick up, handball, shepherd in the 2006 AFL Grand Final between West Coast and Sydney" - OLOSCC Brianna Allen smothered the ball on the wing, followed the smother, picked up handballed and provided a shepherd as her team mate kicked the winning goal with 29seconds left on the clock.
Our Lady of the Southern Cross College ran out 2.1 (13) to 1.3 (9) victors and win the Youth Girls Cup, Junior Division. OLOSCC now progress to the SEQ Grand-Final at Yeronga AFC on Thursday 22nd March and we wish them all the best.
Big congratulations to St Saviours College student Fabian Macumboy who took out the Junior Division MVP.
