The 2012 AFLDD Preseason Cup finally kicked off on Saturday with all 8 senior teams in action at Highfields Kratzke Oval. After quite a bit of rain in the last couple of weeks the ground looked in very good condition albeit a bit slippery. Only the first couple of games avoided the wet conditions which called off the first round of matches.
Highfields continued their Preseason Cup success under new coach Ben Adams, convincingly winning Pool A over Souths, Warwick & Lockyer Valley who split the honours for 2nd through 4th. The Lions started the day with a 4 goal victory over Souths, implementing a highly successful rolling zone right through to their half back line. They then followed that win up with a 6 goal win over a 10 man Warwick and the highest score of the day against the 2011 spooners, Demons.
Coolaroo won all 3 matches in Pool B during the afternoon. After falling 2 kicks down midway through the first half, they came from behind keeping University goalless in the second half to run out 3 goal winners. Keeping last years premiers to just 2 behinds and Goondiwindi scoreless ensured they won the pool and the day. A tough attack on the footy worried the opposition off the ball and their cleanliness in the slippery conditions proved too much.
The season kicks off in 3 weeks when all 8 teams will show their true colours.
