A new look Bendigo will take to the field in 2012 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Sunday April 1 will see Bendigo Football Club open their season with a new jumper and revised club name for 2012 and beyond. The Club has made these changes with the intentions to commit to developing a strong link with the community, as Bendigo’s very own VFL stand alone team in 2013.
This transition is important to Bendigo as they travel towards season 2013. This year will see them continue their 10 year partnership with the Essendon Football Club, but plans for 2013 have been set in place early. The key to this early planning is searching for a new Coach to assist in talent identification for next year.
Newly promoted Bendigo General Manager Graham Pratt believes the role of the coach will be important for the club moving forward.
“The new coach will need to work pro-actively with the local football community... working with the Bendigo Pioneers, Bendigo FL, Goulburn Valley FL, and others right through the North-Western Victorian region”.
After creating a solid pathway and identifying locally developed players, this new coaching appointment will take over as Head Coach for the Bendigo Football Club in 2013, taking over from Hayden Skipworth.
Skipworth, who has held a development role with Essendon since retiring as a player in 2009, is delighted to have the opportunity to coach Bendigo in 2012, taking over from Shannon Grant who has taken up an assistants role with the Western Bulldogs.
Bendigo has a strong track record of developing talent within their squad. 2011 saw the drafting of four Bendigo players into the AFL; Tory Dickson (Western Bulldogs), Sam Dunell (St Kilda), Shane Biggs (Sydney Swans) and Tom Campbell (Western Bulldogs).
After dropping Bombers from their title for this year, Bendigo has created a competition to engage supporters to help the Club come up with a new nickname. Supporters can enter the competition through the Club’s newly developed website; www.bendigofc.com.au and go into the running to win one of many great prizes on offer including a $2,000 Term Deposit at Bendigo Bank.
Entries close on Friday 16th March.
Bendigo Football Club starts season 2012 in round two, taking on Frankston at 2:00pm Sunday 1st April at Frankston Oval.
