With the powerhouse Auckland team dominating the Over 40s grade, the pressure is on to see which contender will meet them in the final. Kapiti Horowhenua look most likely at this stage but with Auckland defeating them 11-1 to close out the day, it will be a mighty effort for the underdogs to make an impact.
Counties Manukau and Wellington are also in the mix to make the Final and the Semi Finals tomorrow morning could yet provide a number of surprises.
Wellington v Kapiti Horowhenua Match report
Kapiti Horowhenua started the game strongly with two quick touchdowns in the opening stanza to Matthew Greenham, the second one set up by a scoop from Jordan Rogers
It took Wellington 10 minutes respond with Joseph Birch stepping his marker, creating the overlap, and Raymond To’o scores. Kapiti Horowhenua respond immediately with Dean Waiwatai cutting between the Wellington link and middle, on the back of a strong drive to the line, and off loading for Michael MacGregor to score
Kapiti Horowhenua created several scoring opportunities near the end of the half, which they were unable to complete through poor ball handling. Wellington ruck ball was on the ground to long and slowed down their progress, while allowing the Kapiti Horowhenua defence ample time to reset and recover, eventualy holding a 3-2 lead at halftime.
Wellington started the second half strongly with a short hole play that caught the Kapiti Horowhenua players ball watching and failing to react.
While it got Wellington back in the game, back to back penalty count on the five for ruck infringements against the team form the capital gave Shane Kini the opportunity to step back and dive underneath to score. The next attacking set for Kapiti Horowhenua saw Clayton Cook beat his marker and score.
Wellington then pulled one back through a long ball play, before Kapiti Horowhenua put the result beyond doubt through two individual touchdowns to Sane Kini to mae it 7-3 to Kapiti Horowhenua.
