Canterbury headed off a massive challenge by North Harbour today and are the team to beat in the Mens Over 30s grade. The two teams met in the final match of the day and pulled out all stops to gain the all-important momentum leading into the finals on Tuesday.
From the firs two tap-offs both sides immediately scored. Canterbury then hit the lead after a simple overlap before North Harbour responded immediately with a nice short hole play for Scott McLiver.
The teams continued to exchange Touchdowns in a high-energy back and forth match. Canterbury though utilised a longball play twice in short succession for a great result; scoring on both occasions and going into the halftime break 5-3 ahead.
The second half commenced with Harbour scoring two touchdowns to draw them game level. A period unfolded where neither team could breach the defence and both sides focused on yardage plays as the clock ticked down. Canterbury then showed some dominance which ended in Eli Doornable and Marley Hyslop both scoring touchdowns.
Manawatu finished on three wins and a loss and will be looking forward to the chance to upset North Harbour tomorrow afternoon. Whanganui and Otago came away with two wins and two losses by the end of the day.
