North Harbour have proven to be the strongest side throughout the opening rounds of the Over 50 Mens grades this year. Canterbury are currently second in the group after a win against Wellington before drawing with Counties Manukau to close the day.
In other action, Manawatu and Wellington faced off against each-other in the morning with the first seven minutes punctuated by handling error by both teams. Once they settled, John Scully split the Manawatu defence and passed off for Wellington to take the lead. Over the next three minutes Wellington scored two more touchdowns through scoops to lead 7-0 in what seemed like no time.
The second half started positively for Manawatu with Michael Kerins diving between the Wellington middle and link to score a solo touchdown. Wellington responded immediately with an attacking set on the Manawatu line with Scully scoring uncontested.
The teams then traded touchdowns with the final score 10-3 in favor of wellington.
The other team in the group Counties Manukau were beaten by North Harbour in the morning but fought back strongly against Canterbury for the draw to keep them in the mix come finals time.
