President's Update January 27th 2012

Business Office Manager Appointed

It is with great pleasure that I report the association has appointed Jo Chu as Business Office Manager for the EDJBA.  This is a part time position of on average 30 hours per week based at the association’s office at Manningham Templestowe Leisure Centre.

The association received in excess of twenty applications for the position and after an exhaustive interview and selection process Jo was selected as the successful candidate.  A number of candidates had exceptional credentials and the interviewing team of Jenni James, John Morkham, John Matthews and myself were pleased with the response to the advertisement and the calibre of applicants.

Jo brings to the position extensive experience in both sports and basketball administration.  She has worked in a range of positions in sporting organisations including Basketball Victoria, Melbourne Storm and the Diamond Valley Basketball Association.

Her working career started as a casual employee of the Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Club where she acted as Stadium Supervisor for both domestic and championship games. With the Melbourne Storm she hosted and coordinated the Storm’s corporate areas, was special events coordinator and took on reception and administrative duties.

She had a placement at Basketball Victoria where she gained valuable experience promoting and coordinating the Great Australian Shootout and organised and coordinated media launches and civic receptions.

This led to her gaining employment at the Diamond Valley Basketball Association where among other duties she coordinated the domestic competition for forty clubs and their volunteers.  She organised clinics, liaised with venue management, the association and the Council.

Accepting the position with the EDJBA meant her resigning from her position with the Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Club where she was employed as the club’s Championship Program Support Officer.  In this role she was given the tasks of managing the operations and promotion of the four senior State Championship Teams, creating budgets in line with the analysis of the program’s operating strategy, seeking sponsorship, coordinating corporate events and volunteers, updating membership databases and developing grant applications for the local council.

Jo coaches her son in an under eight D Grade EDJBA competition and therefore is experiencing the EDJBA at the coalface. She reports her son is enjoying the experience immensely playing with his friends at this level.

We look forward to Jo’s experience, work ethic and enthusiasm assisting us to take the EDJBA to another level.

EDJBA Logo

At the Executive meeting in December the committee decided to develop a new logo for the association.  As part of this process it was decided to appeal to clubs or individuals with graphic designer experience or with ideas to volunteer their services to create a logo that will embody the aspirations of the new committee and the members of the association.

Should anyone feel they have something to offer in this process, either by creating a logo or by offering ideas then I would like to hear from them. Please contact me at roncarlton@optusnet.com.au and I will provide them with a design brief which can be used as a guideline for a new logo design.  If concept drawings are provided but not finished art we are able to develop that for use so it may be that a player or official of any age may like to submit a design.

It would be exciting for an under ten player to have their design chosen.  We are open to all suggestions.

Eltham Dandenong Basketball Tournament.

As I write the Eltham Dandenong Basketball tournament is underway.  We congratulate Eltham for being a key part of what is the biggest junior basketball tournament in Australia.

Knowing the amount of work involved in the organisation of the tournament our thanks go to the many volunteers who sacrifice their long weekend to ensure this event is a great success.  It is a credit to David Hickman and his band of merry workers that the weekend is so successful.

We are fortunate in this area to have so many proactive clubs who bring basketball experiences to so many from the highest level at WNBL to the lowest junior domestic competition.

Welcome back and best wishes for the year.

Happy Hoops,

Ron Carlton,

President.
