President's Update December 23rd 2011

Scoresheets

Some end of year housekeeping before we all have a well earned break over Christmas.

Sue Scott and Alison Romas, with the Executive’s support, have asked me to remind all people scoring that the following procedures need to be adhered to so that records can be kept up to date and unnecessary checking and altering of scoresheets is eliminated.

This latter work takes up an inordinate amount of time and is essentially a burden that does not need to be borne by the Fixtures Officers and David Bacon.

  • Coaches Names

Please ensure that coaches’ names are entered on the sheet for all teams.  This is not a subversive way to fine clubs but rather a requirement that protects the club, the individual and the association should something untoward occur. The reason Working with Children’s checks are insisted on is because it is a legal requirement but more importantly as a protection for all concerned.  By having the coaches’ names on the scoresheet allows for the correct procedure to be carried out should there be a complaint or more serious report.

  •  Children’s Christian and Surname

It is essential that all players’ Christian and surnames be entered on the scoresheet to ensure no confusion as to which player is playing in that particular game.

  •  Players Not Playing Crossed Off

Please ensure when scoring that any player not playing gets crossed off on the scoresheet.  This allows the registrars to accurately log the number of games a player takes part in so that eligibility for finals is accurately calculated.

  •  Fill in players Recorded

All fill in players must be recorded on the scoresheet to ensure an accurate record of the game.

Working with Children’s Checks

It is imperative that all clubs declare that all their coaches have Working with Children’s checks.  All coaches must be screened as per the Basketball Victoria policy. The

Executive have decided not to ask clubs to forward Working with Children’s check details to the association, which is another administrative burden, but rather ask clubs to declare that all coaches have Working with Children checks.

At the time of the last Executive meeting less than half the clubs had advised the association and we ask that you treat this as an urgent priority.  This is as much a protection for the coaches and clubs but also the association should an unfortunate incident occur.

It Must Be Christmas! Another Good News Story!

Marilyn Maclaren has sent this letter to me which is one sent by Simon Owens of the Nunawading Vikings club to the Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Club.

“Dear committee members of the Bulleen Boomers (Saturday domestic)

I was watching my daughter's Nunawading Vikings U10 Girls team play against your Bulleen 5 girls on Saturday morning at 11am.

Both teams had only five players.  About 10 minutes into the first half one of our girls was injured (accidental) and had to come off the court leaving our team with only four players.

Without any hesitation your coach subbed one of her players off the court so the game could continue with each team having four players each on court.

I cannot tell you how much this action pleased everyone in the stadium.  Parents of both sides were very impressed with this display of great sportsmanship.

As a committee member of the Nunawading Vikings I wanted to alert you of this good deed and ask you to please pass on my regards and thanks to the coach.

Thank you

Simon Owens

Nunawading Vikings.

I personally, and the Executive committee are very heartened to hear of these considerable acts of goodwill among the clubs and its officials.  It is without doubt that acts like these exemplify the spirit that Junior Domestic basketball should be played in.  Well done to the Bulleen coach who unfortunately is not named.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

As we break for Christmas and the New Year I would personally like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. It is difficult to please everyone in such a large organisation but I would like to thank those who have been so very complimentary of the things we have achieved in such a short time.

To those who have had issues with us I can assure that we take them very seriously and will be addressing a number of them in the future. These include grading and some computer assistance with fixturing.

In particular I would like to thank the Executive Committee plus Jim Kafkalakis and David Bacon who embraced all the changes we were elected to make.  They have been a considerable support to myself and their work ensures we are the dynamic organisation we wish the EDJBA to be.

So on that note I sign off for 2011 with the knowledge that 2012 will be an exciting one for the EDJBA and for all participants in the association.

Best wishes,

Ron Carlton
President.
