The dedication of Sale United Soccer Club president Michael Mitchell (pictured) has been recognised by Victorian soccer's governing body at Football Federation Victoria's annual Gold Medal Night on Monday.

Mitchell was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award at the grand function, held in the Victory Room at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

His involvement with the Gippsland Soccer League club began in the mid 1970s when he moved to the area from Werribee and has included numerous coaching and administration roles.

"It's just a passion I've had since I was a kid, I was introduced to the game as a young boy and gone from there," Mitchell said.

"I have three children who currently play as well so I'm just there supporting them and that's really my involvement now to try to keep the club going for the enjoyment of my children and anybody else.

"You don't do these sort of things to get awards but to actually get recognised by people who sit back and look at what you do is an honour."

Mitchell said his proudest achievements included overseeing the recent upgrade to the club's facilities at Godfrey Baldwin Reserve and helping young players realise their full potential.

"I enjoy seeing the kids progress, I've had a young boy, Marcus Stergiopoulos, who I coached when he was a young feller, he went on to score for Carlton in the (National Soccer League) final," he said.

Sale vice-president Grant Richardson said the award was "worthy recognition" for a dedicated club volunteer.

"He's put a lot of hard work into the club over a long period of time," Richardson said.

"As a player he was also part of the club's only premiership team in 1980." Mitchell was nominated for the award by Sue Mitrevski on behalf of the club's committee, after he was awarded life membership of the Swans last year.

"He's very easy going, can talk to anyone and he knows how to make contact with the right people to help the club," Richardson said.
