President's Update December 2nd 2011

Fixtures Day

A week on from the Fixtures Day and I am still reflecting on the serious contribution the many volunteers within the association make to the success of our competition.  It was an excellent opportunity for me to meet and talk with great numbers of people from the various clubs in the association.

This contribution in no small way ensures the competition remains at the forefront of junior basketball in Australia.  Many people feel that the day could be shortened by the use of technology but in the process of examining ways to achieve this our technological gurus report that the system we have is an extremely complex one for computers to handle.  However ways to streamline the process are being looked into and although there are no guarantees we may in the future be able to shorten the day.

One of the many benefits of the day is that it gives people from all of the competing clubs the opportunity to meet and discuss basketball with each other. This meeting face to face proved to be a very good means of getting personnel from all clubs to set up relationships that no other day on the calendar of the EDJBA provides.

The EDJBA provides for a unique aspect in that the fixturing takes into account compatibilities, that is the opportunity for individual coaches to manage a number of teams thus ensuring more players can be catered for.

This aspect of the EDJBA is something that is at the core of the EDJBA’s values but because of this means that Fixtures Day can become a lengthy one.  Providing the opportunity for the maximum number of players to participate is a value worth preserving.

It is thirty odd years since I attended a Fixtures Day and it was interesting to note that the system had not changed.  I made this comment to David Hickman during the day and enquired as to who devised the system.  The origins of the day go back to the early days of the EDJBA when Ian Loxton, Ron Anderson, Ted Shaw and David Hickman devised the system that is in place today.  It is testament to them that the system survives from the days when approximately 300 teams competed unlike the 960 plus of today.

So once again I say thank you to the many people who laboured last Sunday to give us the fixtures for the summer season.  Well done!

Business Office Manager

At the Executive Meeting held on Monday 21st November it was decided to advertise for a Business Office Manager to manage the association’s affairs.  This will be a part time position of thirty hours per week and be based at Manningham Templestowe Leisure Centre.

Advertisements will appear on the EDJBA website and Seek.

In addition all clubs are being asked to load the advertisement onto their websites as will Basketball Victoria.

Should you be interested in this exciting and challenging position or you know someone who may be interested we would love to hear from you or your friends.

Applications are being called for and can be sent along with resumés to myself at roncarlton@optusnet.com.au or posted to the association address PO Box 592 Templestowe 3106.

Life Members

We are attempting to locate a number of life members and in doing that need contact details.  If you know telephone numbers, email addresses or postal addresses for the following people please let Megan Rouse know asap so that we can get in touch with them this week.

  • Dawn Cleland
  • Lorraine Bradshaw
  • Don White
  • Bill Voellner
  • Paul Haskings

It is the committee’s intention to have a Christmas get together with the Life Members following the next committee meeting on Monday 12th December.

Time is of the essence so if you can help us a sense of urgency would be appreciated.

Logo

At the Executive committee meeting mentioned above another decision was made to develop a brief for a logo to replace the existing EDJBA logo.

Penne Ebbage, Sue Scott and myself have been delegated to work on this task.

At this stage the three of us will approach the task with an open mind.  It may mean the current logo will be revamped, made more relevant or a new logo recommended.

We will keep you posted on progress.

Happy Hoops for the coming season.

Ron Carlton President.
