A Reserve grade has not been played since 2001 when decreasing player numbers forced the competition to cease. The league is now experiencing record numbers of junior players and ever-increasing senior player numbers, leading to the decision to bring back the fight for the Adrian Jericho sheild.
The competition is initially targeted at 12 to 15 players a side with some clubs looking to field their own side and others looking to merge together to field a team. Young players who have just graduated from the junior ranks are expected to be mentored by experienced players, creating an exciting prospect of youthful energy blending with developed tactics and skills. Many new players are also anticipated to join the league due to a lesser commitment to training and a shorter game format.
The competition is also likely to form a stepping stone for the Pittsworth-Milmerran Power to form a senior team in 2012. Up until now, they have only fielded junior teams since their inception in 2004 and have been looking at ways to introduce the game to a wider audience.
Although the draw is yet to be confirmed, the introduction of the Reserve grade will also shift some A Grade fixtures towards a night time showcase played under lights, adding a whole new element to the competition.
