The AFL Cairns Women's League will start on Saturday with four teams set to contest the season's premiership. Defending champions North Cairns, grand finalists Manunda, Centrals Trinity Beach and South Cairns will field teams in the summer competition.
Round one will be played at Watsons Oval and will coincide with the under-16 girls Australian rules state championships, which begin on Friday.
North Cairns player-coach Jo Butland, who will mentor the Tigers with Brett Potter, hopes to see some new blood take the field this season.
With the inaugural under-15 high school girls’ competition successfully staged earlier in the year, Butland said interest in women’s football was growing.
"The last couple of years the pathway has been fruitful," she said.
