VCL Round Two Wrap
After everyone had a round of Victorian Champions League action under their belts, we were ready for Round 2 to kick-off and what a great round it was.
In the Under 13 Boys Central City and Southern Bluetongues had wins at the State Football Centre. City defeated Rivers 3-1 while Southern beat North East 4-0. Western Wolves defeated Northern All Stars 5-1. South East and North West both put four past Wimmera South Coast Eagles (4-1) and Eastern (4-2) respectively while the biggest win of the round was in the country clash between Loddon Mallee Lightning and Gippsland Knights, with the Lighting winning 7-1.
North West Wanderers kicked off their second week with a 1-0 win over Eastern in the Under 13 Girls. South East Cougars also had a narrow win, with a first half goal enough to secure a 1-0 win over Wimmera South Coast Eagles. North East and Loddon Mallee had 4-0 wins over Southern and Gippsland respectively. Western Wolves defeated Northern All Stars 6-2 while Rivers defeated Central City 6-0.
In the Under 14 Boys competition, North East Diamonds and Southern Bluetongues shared the points, their match finishing 1-1. Gippsland Knights and Loddon Mallee Lighting also had a 1-1 draw. A goal either side of half time saw Central defeat Rivers 2-0. Northern got the better of Western, winning 3-0. North West Wanders played brilliantly to defeat Eastern 4-1 while the Cougars were also in fine form in their 3-0 win over the Eagles.
The Under 15 Boys competition saw tightly contested matches across the board. After a goalless first half, a flurry of late chances saw Central City defeat Rivers 2-1. Western Wolves defeated Northern All Stars 6-1 and Gippsland Knights overcame Loddon Mallee Lightning 3-1. Neither the Wanderers’ or Eastern’s defences could be breached in their game, the scores remaining 0-0, while Southern Bluetongues and South East Cougars had 3-1 wins over North East and Wimmera respectively.
Rivers FC kicked off the Under 15 Girls Round 2 matches with a 5-2 win over Central City. South East Cougars defeated Wimmera South Coast Eagles 3-0 and North East Diamonds were on the winning side of a 3-1 score line against Southern Bluetongues. Loddon Mallee beat Gippsland 2-1, Western beat Northern 3-1 and North West defeated Eastern 4-0.
Central City were the biggest winners in the Under 17 Boys, with an 8-2 win over Rivers FC. Despite the high score line, Rivers showed promise and certainly earned their two goals. Southern defeated North East 4-2 while Eastern defeated North West 3-0. South East and Wimmera had an entertaining 3-3 draw and Gippsland and Loddon Mallee also spilt the points, drawing 1-1. After trailing 1-0 at half time, Western Wolves dug deep to come out 3-2 winners over Northern.
The Under 17 Girls saw some great finishing by the strikers.This round saw 37 goals scored in the six matches played North East defeated Southern 9-1, North West defeated Eastern 7-2, Central defeated Rivers 6-1 and Loddon Mallee defeated Gippsland 5-1. In other matches, Northern beat Western 3-0 and South East and Wimmera drew 1-1.
