After many hours spent watching club, school, regional, state and national level games of football, the Brisbane Lions are pleased to announce both the Level One and Level Two Hyundai Lions Academy squads for 2012.
Level One and Two squad members are identified primarily from the Queensland State Under 14 Championships, the Queensland State Under 12 and Under 15 School Boy Championships, as well as the Rookie Search program.
The entry level Future Stars squad will be finalised in late November, while the Level Three squad will be released early next year.
A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting the squads - including fitness levels, skill level and game knowledge. Feedback was also sought from AFLQ development managers and various coaches on the players’ attitude at training and in games, commitment and general behavior.
Selection in the Hyundai Lions Academy is a tremendous honour for these budding young Queensland footballers, and provides them with a great opportunity to further develop their football and personal development.
All players in the Academy program are reviewed annually before a decision is made on which players will continue on the following year. It should be noted that junior players can enter, exit and re-enter the Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy at any stage depending on a player’s attitude, commitment, improvement and ongoing development.
Also, players are not selected based on which junior club they play at, but rather their performances in games, attitude on and off the field and their willingness to learn.
So, in line with AFL Queensland’s policy of junior players changing clubs, the Brisbane Lions Academy does not encourage players to change clubs in the hope that it will aid their selection in representative teams or the Academy.
Instead, the Academy encourage players to stay at their existing club, and if greater challenges are needed, recommends possibly playing up one age group within their club. This will help them experience a higher standard and more challenging opportunities.

The Hyundai Lions Academy is a development and coaching program designed for aspiring AFL players between the ages of 12 and 18 years. It is an elite program with the aim of consistently producing AFL standard footballers for the Club.
