EDJBA Weekly Update from the President Sept 3rd 2011

Big V Competition News

With the Big V season coming to an exciting close it is pertinent that we congratulate the Eltham Wildcats who had both their senior championship men and women in their respective grand finals.  The men were the favourites to take out the title but Waverley, the reigning premiers, had other ideas and triumphed once again.  However the Waverley men only got the job done after a titanic struggle that went into double overtime.

After some astute recruiting the Eltham senior championship women were the red hot favourites to win the championship and on the night they duly delivered.  The girls had taken the team from bottom to top in one season and our congratulations go to coach Greg Jeffers and his team.

Led by World Championships gold medallist Hollie Grima and ably backed up by Commonwealth Games gold medalist Katrina Hibbert, the Wildcats were too strong for their opponents and duly delivered.  Add in Zoe Carr, former WNBL Bulleen Boomer, and it was a star studded cast that took out the title.

Bulleen finished in fifth place in the senior championship women’s competition as did their counterparts the men.

The men had the distinction of beating all the finalists but in the end could not get enough winning games together to make the finals.  They have been on a steady rise up the divisions coming from Division one some two years ago.

Warrandyte finished sixth in Division One Women while their men ended up third in division two.

If you have talented players in your ranks who want to play at a higher level then we urge you to seek out one of the above clubs who all have very good programs in place.

Finances

We have been waiting the arrival home of new Treasurer John Matthews from his holiday in Queensland.  It turned out to be a longer holiday than expected as his flight last Saturday was cancelled due to bad weather and he had to wait for an alternative flight.  The earliest he could get was on the following Tuesday.  There is no truth to the rumour that we are all sympathising with his bad luck.  Stuck in sunny Queensland. Yeah right!!

This week it is back to work and he and I will catch up to work on the finances with a view to starting the process of planning a budget, ascertaining the state of the bank balance which is healthy and looking forward to identifying items that will need attention.

We have encountered some problems with the transfer of the signatories due to the bank’s inefficiencies but we hope to have this ironed out this week.

Office

Both the telephone and internet have been connected to the office and part of the finance planning will be the need to address the type of equipment required.

It has been recommended that we obtain at least one PC and possibly two with a view that one act as a server while the other becomes a work station.

As part of the above planning and implementation remote access to the server would be set up to allow various committee members and other key personnel to access material from home.

More on this when the planning and decisions are made.

Finals

To those teams who were successful yesterday well done and to those who missed out look forward to next year and plan to do better.

I visited a couple of stadiums yesterday and I was fortunate to see games being played with great intent but in good spirit.

With the finals coming to their climax I wish all teams the very best.
