Highfields kept Dalby in the game throughout the Preliminary Final with their woeful kicking in front of goal and in the end ran out 6.12 (48) to 2.4 (16) over the Swannies.
It was a game led by the Cherry brothers through the midfield as E.Martin (Highfields) kicked the first goal of the game as the Lions went into the first break up by 5points in a see-sawing affair. Brigid Gaur of Dalby was the stand alone warrior in the opening term for the Swannies.
Highfields continued their momentum early in the second term with Tom Clark kicking his first as Sheath, Ernst and E.Martin, along with the Cherry duo running riot. Highfields were unable to reward themselves on the scoreboard, with the score having Highfields 2.9 (21) to Dalby 0.2 (2) keeping Dalby in the game. Gaur again stood tall as Matthews, Gillespie and Daff contributed well to the second term.
Dalby came out a different team in the "premiership quarter" and were able to link up a number of impressive passages of play through Allen, Matthews and Gaur again. A beautiful snap at goal from Tom Matthews kept the Swannies season alive. As they have done all season the Cherry brothers stood tall when needed most and set up a number of attacking raids where the Lions were able to stretch their lead further.
Going into the last term, Dalby were only down by 21points and started well, goaling through small forward Emily Butcher. Though, it was all one way traffic from here as the Lions piled on two more goals to seal the win and set up their first ever Grand-Final appearance as a club.
Highfields will now play Coolaroo in this weekend’s Under 12 Grand-Final.
