Toowoomba's St Ursula's College have staged a remarkable comeback to take out the 2011 Brisbane Lions Youth Girls Cup in muddy conditions at Yeronga AFC.
St Ursula's knew that coming into the final they would need to be on top of their game against their much fancied opponent in Mountain Creek SHS from the Sunshine Coast. Both schools have built up quite a footballing rivalry over the past few years with both schools facing off in last year’s Brisbane Lions Youth Girls State Final and earlier in the year at the Jonathan Brown 9-a-side State Final.
It was déjà-vu as the Mountain Creek girls attempted to repeat their 2010 grand final win over their Toowoomba counterparts. Chasing a third consecutive flag, St Ursula’s were held scoreless in the first quarter as the Creekers dominated possession but failed to take significant advantage, recording four behinds in quick succession.
The girls from the Darling Downs lifted in the second quarter, and from then on it was one of the most exciting and fiercely-fought matches Yeronga has seen in school football this season. With scores locked at 3-0 to 2-6 three minutes from full-time, it looked like the grand final would go into extra time.
But St Ursula’s, led by centre half back Kailah Rogers, and managed to rally the SUC girls in an exciting last couple of minutes.
Brisbane Lions Josh Drummond the Schools Ambassador for AFL in Queensland quoted that SUC's Kailah Rogers was "Scarlett like" (Matthew Scarlett Geelong -All Australian) in her defensive and smart play.
St Ursula's were able to record 2 very important behinds in the last 60seconds of the game which saw them crowned the #1 School in Queensland for the Brisbane Lions Youth Girls Cup. Kailah Rogers was named best-a-field for St Ursula's taking out the Best on Ground Medal awarded by Josh Drummond.
This is St Ursula's Colleges second State title for the year after taking out the Jonathan Brown Cup win earlier in the year, the first time a School on the Darling Downs and also in Queensland has taken out both State titles in the same year.
