Congratulations to the Wollongong Saints who took out the inaugural SWAFL Division Two Grand Final against Mac Uni on Saturday 27 August 2011.
In a hard fought match at Mac Uni's homeground in North Ryde, the Saints won the game 8.8 56 to 3.4 22.
After arriving in their chartered "Saints Mobile" at the Warriors ground, the Wollongong girls looked focussed and strong, possibly due to some pump up tunes and team bonding on the 1.5 hour trip. The Mac Uni girls also looked prepared and fierce with their war paint ready and had some very excited and loyal fans wearing various forms of supporters attire, braveheart style.
As the teams took to the pitch, the first quarter saw a tousle for the ball and some good passages down the right hand wing, but neither team capitalised and the score was 1.1 7 apiece at the first break.
Some stern words from both coaches saw the teams lift, with Mac Uni firing off two quick goals care of some smart play by Amanda Farrugia and Kerry Taylor but the Saints didn't drop their heads and responded with four of their own before the siren sounded for half time. Score at the main break was 5.4 34 (Saints) to 3.2 20 (Mac Uni).
The third quarter saw the running play of some of Wollongong's superstars of the future combine for another two goals, with Mac Uni only troubling the scoreboard with a behind. Three quarter time saw the Saints leading by 26 and the road ahead looked tough for the Warriors. Score 7.5 47 to 3.3 21.
The last quarter of the match was a good contest, and despite the encouragement from the Warriors fans, the Saints held their backline together and secured the win in the Div Two Grand Final.
Congratulations to all players, coaches and officials associated with the Saints and the Warriors, for their combined efforts on the day, and to Saints #21 Laura Russell for taking out Best on Ground.
Prior to the Div 2 Grand Final, the Balmain Dockers won their preliminary final against Western Wolves 11.10 76 to 5.2 32 to secure their place in the Division 1 Grand Final against the Sydney Uni Bombers. Make sure you come down and watch the game this Saturday at 1pm at Mac Uni's University Oval to see who will take out the hotly contested 2011 Division 1 Premiership.
