Ryan Cherry kicked 6 goals as the Highfields Lions roared against South Toowoomba at Harristown Park on Saturday morning.
Highfields sent a warning to Dalby and Coolaroo after they convincingly defeated the Bombers 16.13 (109) to 1.5 (11). Souths struggled to compete with Highfields who kicked three opening quarter goals to Souths one behind. The Cherry brothers led the way for Highfields through the midfield, as Souths had no answers to the physical, running game style of the Lions.
A four goal second quarter to the Lions pushed the margin out to 38points at the main break. Bombers were able to kick their first major of the game through Captain Ryan Neumann. McDougall and Walters the stand outs for the young Bombers as was Cleghorn and Aitken for the Lions.
If Souths were to stage a comeback, they needed to start in the third quarter, the premiership quarter. Winning the first clearance, kicking deep inside 50, the Bombers were able to record a behind and Souths were able to stem the momentum for some time. After some impressive link and running work, Highfields piled on the majors stunning the Bombers as the Lions kicked 7 third quarter goals and put the Bombers out of the game.
The last quarter saw the Lions win all but a couple of centre clearances and blaze away in front of goal. Highfields inaccuracy in front of goal kept the margin from completely blowing out scoring 2goals 7 behinds in the final term. To Souths credit the young side never gave up and are to be congratulated on a fantastic season they played.
Highfields now progress to the Preliminary Final to be played in 2 weeks time and will play the loser of the Dalby v Coolaroo Qualifying final.
