A large crowd watched an entertaining game, played in good spirit, which saw the Lismore Swans proceed to the preliminary final in two weeks with a 21.14 (140) to 11.9 (75) win over the Byron Magpies.
Lismore had first use of the breeze but good defence by the Magpirs restricted them to 3.5 but they could only magage a solitary behind themselves. The second term saw the Swans up the tempo and they controlled play, kicking 7 goals. Byron messed up many promising forward moves with poor disposal and could manage only 3.4 to trail 45 popints at half time.
The Magpies had done well to contain on ballers Bevan & Bruce but Lismore had many others who stepped up to share the work load. Byron on the other hand continued to work hard but let themselves down with their disposal skills.
The third quarter again saw the Swans make the most of the breeze and kicked 5 goals to 2 but inaccuracy robbed them of more. Their lead had blown out to 65 points, 15.11 to 5.6. The last quarter rained goals with Byron, to their credit, fighting out the game to the end. They kicked three unanswered goals early in the quarter and finished with 6.3 which was matched by the Swans.
Lismore deserved their win and now await the loser of next weeks game between Tweed Coast & Ballina.
Byron on the other hand finished a very difficult season where they have struggled with injuries and numbers all year. The last few games have given then hope of a revival next season.
