Liniment, strapping tape and a whole lot of excuses will be broken out at Crathern Oval tomorrow when the Centrals Trinity Beach Old Dogs take on the Cairns Brewers in an Australian rules masters clash.
While the game is a fundraiser for the Bulldogs, the one thing a footballer never retires is his competitiveness. The teams will be vying for the Allen Calendars Cup and Old Dogs coach Andrew Tulloch reckons his players are specials after flogging the Brewers last year.
"When you look at the boys, over half our team have won premierships and we’ve got former captains and coaches in there as well," Tulloch said. "It’s hard to take that away from them no matter how unfit they are."
Tulloch said it was not hard finding former Bulldogs to play in what has become an annual fixture.
"It takes a fair few phone calls to round everyone up, but the boys are keen as mustard to get together and do what we did last year, which is towel up the Cairns masters," he said.
Brewers on-baller Ken Fuller said an emphasis on structure would help his team upset the home side.
"Last year, we had so many players wanting to play, I think about 40 all up, that we kept rotating everyone through the game and we weren’t able to play to our normal structures," he said. "Hopefully, that won’t be a problem this year."
