Darling Downs female footy has never been stronger and continues to grow through-out the region. Local products in Marnie McGorm, Jodie Ingleton and Selina Peruntatameri have all come through the schools AFL program and into playing club football for the Darling Downs Crows in the AFL Brisbane Juniors under18 competition.
All three players were selected in the Southern Stars squad which consisted of girls from the Gold Coast, Northern Rivers and Darling Downs.
The Darling Downs Crows Youth Girls development program was put together by the regions Development Officer Jeff Neumann, to help bring more female participants to Australian Rules Football.
"It's great to see so many girls playing our great game and now to get 3 girls is not only great for the individuals but fantastic for our region, that is developing into an AFL powerhouse region". Neumann stated. "Currently we are looking at building a solid base to build up from and have our very own girls competition for the region, in the near future".
The three that have been selected in the Queensland side come from different backgrounds, with; McGorm having a very strong background in soccer for many years, Ingleton a local schoolgirl with a number of sporting backgrounds and also Peruntatameri who has Rioli and Woenamerri in her family tree.
The trio have been selected in a 26 strong squad and that 26, 6 are from the Southern Stars squad. The Queensland squad is listed below;
Brisbane Flames: Jordan Zanchetta, Allie Anderson, Nikki Wallace, Tayla Harris, Emily Bates, Rosie Pyke, Kristie Hudson, Caitlin Collins, Sheena Paul.
Central Coast Cobras: Megan Hunt, Gabbey Mooney, Bethany Gapes, Emma Aeschlimann, Tamika Hansen, Rachel Withoos, Keeley Richards, Krystal Hansen.
Southern Stars: Marnie McGorm, Romy Bryant, Gemma Brinkman, Jodie Ingleton, Madeline Barnett, Selena Peruntatameri.
Cairns: Sodyla Kris, Maddie Peeters.
Yeronga: Kristy Wallace.
Emergencies: Mikalya Gray, Tayla Qualtrough, Anna O’Keefe (Flames), Montana Dove (Souths).
