Werribee had a successful trip to the Peninsula as they demolished Frankston by 77 points at Frankston Park last Sunday as Ben Carbonaro reports.
The Tigers won against Casey in their previous game and were hoping to stretch their winning streak to four against a Frankston team that has won a solitary game this season.
It was an evenly matched opening quarter of football as both teams struggled to pass the ball consistently as windy and bitterly cold conditions wreaked havoc. Despite the wind affecting the Port Phillip Bay end of the ground, the Tigers held a slender five point lead at quarter time.
The second quarter featured a never ending procession of stoppages the wind continued to play a role. Neither side was able to move forward quickly and although Frankston continued to work hard around the ground, they still trailed by five points at half-time.
Werribee coach Paul Satterley challenged his players to not allow the Dolphins back into the contest and they took it with both hands winning the third quarter. Playing much more attacking football and tackling hard at stoppages, opportunities to score were hard for Frankston. An eight goal to three quarter helped the Tigers lead by 50 point at the final break.
A hapless Frankston were unable to contain their opponents who kicked six goals to two in the final quarter. The Tigers continued to play a better brand of football that saw them record a fourth consecutive win.
Satterley was happy to get a win in what were terrible conditions for football.
“It was really pleasing, this was always going to be a danger game coming out to Frankston to win the way we did (was great),” he said.
“We put them away with 20 minutes of footy where we got the ascendency and never looked back.”
Ben Speight, Ben Ross and Ben McKinley all kicked three goals for the Tigers, while North Melbourne’s Ross (19 disposals, 4 marks) was best on ground.
Jake Greeley, Khan Haretuku and James Appleford all shared the goal kicking spoils with two goals, with Mark Baguley best for the Dolphins.
The Tigers have a bye this weekend before facing traditional rivals Williamstown at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday week and Frankston host Casey Scorpions on Sunday.
