Upon registration and a brief introduction from development manager Keith Webb to outline the day proceedings the 75 large group was divided into 3 groups containing 2 groups of children aged 6-9 and 1 group aged 10-13.
From there the days activities began. The juniors (6-9) kicked the day off with some auskick warm up activities while the youth group (10-13) began with some team bonding exercises including "The Human Knot" to get the grey matter working for the day. From there the Youth group moved into goal kicking and went through goal kicking routines for each participant as well as the ever popular banana and snap shot at goal while the junior groups also worked on their goal kicking at the ever popular inflatable goal posts.
Local community sport and recreation coordinator Dusty Wilson then delivered a rotation of traditional games clinics with each group that was greatly recieved and in between the breaks the junior groups conducted their own colouring in competitions while the youth group broke into 3 teams and competed in round robin AFL games on the inflatable field.
Lunch had arrived much to the delight of the hungry youngsters who feasted on some BBQ snags and took 15 mins to wind down before the afternoons activities were scheduled to begin. Possibly the highlight of the day for many was the trading card draft which took place for all groups after lunch. Jeffro was hot on the heels of a Chris Judd hologram card while Webby continued to grow his Collingwood Premiership Gold Card collection. Trades and bargaining skills were used wisely by all.
The Youth group then showed all their great skills with the "footy freaks" segment in which Jesse James won himself and his family a family pass to a Brisbane Lions home game 2011 for his flick and snap over his shoulder.
The junior group then moved into their Super Olympics segment while the Youth group conducted its own local "Amazing Race". But the highlight for most was the conclusion of the days events which included the return of crowd favourite Bernie Gabba Vegas and cult figure "the Wiz". All participants then left with their own certificate and showbag and the colouring in competition winners were announced.
All in all the day was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. A big thank you to all DD staff for your professionalism in the running of the day and a special mention to Sharyn Carnahan head chef / Certificate Editor / jack of all trades on the day. The majority of the colouring in entries have been posted on the window of the DDAFL office if you drive by stop and have a look.
