Tye Hughes has been selected in the 2011 Under 16 Queensland Scorpions squad and is the second Darling Downs player to be selected in a Queensland squad following 17 year old Josh Smith who is a-part of the 2011 under 18 Scorpions.
Tye’s selection in the u16's Scorpion squad comes from a strong and consistent performance at the under 16 State Championships for the Country Kookaburra's and also strong performances during the Queensland practice match. Hughes shined at Centre Half Forward for the Kookaburra's and finished the carnival as the Kookaburra's leading goal scorer but in the third and final match was moved too defence and his pressure and defensive work is what finalised his selection in the initial 43-man Queensland Squad.
Tye will now represent the Darling Downs and Country Queensland at the Australia Post under 16 National Championships in Blacktown, Sydney during mid-July for the Queensland Scorpions.
“Tye is a young man with a-lot of talent and also put in the hard work to get to where he is now and it’s paying off,” the Regions Development Keith Webb said on Tye’s selection in the final 25. “Tye has committed and travelled into Toowoomba from Dalby to do as many of our development programs as possible and well the results have shown and he has been rewarded with selection in the Queensland side.” Webb explained.
Hughes will continue to train and play with the Toowoomba Crows in the under 18 SportsReady Cup, as he prepares for the National Championships in July.
Congratulations to Tye on making the final 25, full details on the State team go to www.aflq.com.au and keep an out for full results on how Tye and the Scorpions go in Sydney. Tye is one of six Queensland Country players selected in the State team, proving that country programs are just as effective as the metropolitan programs.
