IF IT weren't for a lick of paint on a shiny new goal post, Aboriginal football would be basking in a double dose of sporting history today.
When Gold Coast's Nathan Krakouer (pictured) snapped a shot on goal in the first quarter in the AFL Round 10 match with Geelong last night, his name was about to be etched into the new club's history books as the first Suns player to kick the first goal at the reincarnated Carrara Oval, now Metricon Stadium.
Barely a minute earlier, the Cats' Matthew Stokes became the first AFL player to score at the refurbished ground, slotting home the game's first goal with a set shot some 30m out.
Within moments, Krakouer, stationed deep in the forward line, pounced on a loose ball. However, his snap shot flicked the inside of the large upright to register the first score for the home side. The honour of first goal for the Suns went to a team-mate minutes later.
Incidentally, Krakouer and Stokes finished the game with two goals apiece and were among their side’s best in an entertaining game, which saw the home side outplay Geelong in the first half before the seasoned Cats bounced back to run away with a 66-point, 21.13 (139) to 10.13 (79), win.
